Code P0505

Spyder, I recently noticed the engine light coming on so I ran the diog. you have posted. It came up with a P0505...loss of idle speed control EFI. I have a Cobra installed as a EFI tuner but the idle trim pot says to leave in factory position on closed loop systems "2007 FLHT" Is this a dealer job or is there anything I can do?

Re: Code P0505

OK Spyder yer a trained HD wrench here is the deal...I called the dealer and asked them about code P0505. They asked me if I had an after market fuel management system on it. I of course said yes cause I have the Cobra Fi2000 "which says to leave the first trim pot alone cause it has no effect on the idle" and they said that was the problem. Even if they reset it it would continue to screw up. Seems kinda funny though since I've had it on for two summers now without a hitch...Two trips to Tenn. and back to Mi. and two trips to the U.P. of Mi. and back, So W.T.F. ?

Come on one of you guys have to have something. Can the idle be reset with a Tec laptop through the Data Link Interface?, Could the ECM be toast?, Could the Cobra BE the problem? I'm old school here a ldle problem was just a screw. emoticon emoticon emoticon

OK if any body is paying attention I disconnected the COBRA and am still throwing the same code so I'm guessin it's not that. I'm down to the ECM or the VSS "Vehicle speed sensor" since the ECM probably cost as much as my ol Shovel I'm goin with the VSS about $ 58.00...UNLESS one of you Genius's got a better idea.

Well seems I'm talkin to My self, but maybe I can work this out talkin to Me. Just had a wrench tell me the IAC "idle air controller" when plugged with your finger should cause the bike to run rough and stall, or just stall right out. Mine does neither, just keeps on runnin. Don't know what that means but I will try to find out. Just keepin ya up to date, not that ya give a sh-t LOL

WELL, It seems to be getting worse. I took it down the road today for a short trip to see how it acted and the hotter the engine got seems the higher the RPMs got ... over 2000 close to 2500 be popin wheelies soon. Still no one knows. The dealers say "Bring it in, We'll take care of ya" They keep saying its the EVIL COBRA causing the whole thing. I ain't buyin it. It's gotta be a sensor. or sompthin. Panhead signin off.
Sure be glad when Spyder gets back. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Well Its like this, I ain't gunna start throwing money guessin at this problem. I have a brother who is on a run right now who has all the sh-t the dealer has...I hope, and when he gets back I'll take it to him and he can pin point the trouble. I don't know if I took it to the dealer, "say I could find one I could trust to do the right thing" If they could hook it up and tell me more then I already know...CODE P0505. I'm told by some thats all they are capable of telling me and the rest is guess work. I know when you hook up a reader to yer car it gives a code and the book tells you what sensor is screwin up " It is usually a sensor" but I don't know what the HD dealer has...It must be a need to know basis and they need my $$$$ so I won't get to know.

Well, this tale is one of brotherhood and a valuable lesson. I'm back up and running thanks to a brother by the name of Hotrod. His name was given to me by some of my brothers who he has done work for and came highly recommended, It go's like this...Through the info from a couple dealers I ended up buying a new IAC " idle air controller" took it and the bike to Hotrod at the end of his busy day so he could install it, which he did. Fired the bike up and...NO CHANGE. After closer inspection, and this is the lesson part, he saw that the butterfly was open slightly, held that way by a screw that I didn't know existed. It's not mentioned in the manual, nor is it shown in the blow up of the throttle body. NO ONE mentioned there was an idle screw, just the contrary every one said the only way to change the idle was by computer. Well this screw is not only not mentioned it is a security star head NOT a torx head but some bastard thing Harley came up with to keep us from messin with the idle. The lesson...start simple, be thorough. And thank God for good brothers like Hotrod.

P0505 Loss of Idle speed control, !st get a electrical service manual and follow the flow chart. OR remove AC , hook up a computer with data mode from a race tuner and verify that the idle control is set to .41 vdc. Its supposed to be open. Check the 5vdc wire that energizes the circuit for a temp ground/open or short. Check resistance on the wire while wiggling the wire. I'd try that first , Low battery, Engine temp sensor, bent contact on IAC all potentials Goodluck
